Zayd's First 1K and a Nightcap with Zahra

On the day of our anniversary, we packed the morning and afternoon full with new and fun activities for the whole family. First up, was Zayd's first 1K. He ran like a champ! Frankly, he is a champ. I did a 5K like a Champ's Slightly Fatigued Mom.

In the afternoon we went to a new Pop Up initiative in an under-utilized but awesome part of downtown - St Peters Square. (My favorite independent theatre The Camero Theatre is there!) We shopped some of the independent vendors and I bought enormous sunglasses to mirror Zahra's bubble coral shades. We even dined at the Rainforest Cafe to feel like real tourists and get Zahra a little warmed up to mechanical animals pre-Disney. (She cried. It was foreshadowing.)

Lastly, we got Zahra nice and hyper before having Joe Joe come over to babysit for a few hours and try to get these kiddos to bed.

Here she is exlaiming, "I am four!" and then hysterically laughing.

It's almost like she can't believe she is getting away with saying this!

"OK, OK, I am two-sy" It is her new favorite number. It competes with Zayd's constant declaration that he is Four-ty. Also, look at this lady grow! She needs new jammy pants! Heck, with the midriff I guess she needs new jammies!

Finally, a little light reading "The Birthday Horoscope Book" before bed. It's the children's favorite.

Six Years In, the Iron Anniversary

Our six month anniversary was earlier this month and we didn't have a lot of fanfare. We kept going back and forth on what Iron gifts to give each other (or ourselves, jointly) and ended up with, lets go to a good Texas restaurant (Boehler House) and enjoy live music. I figure there were brands on the cattle before they chopped them up for Sam's meal, and surely something was cooked in a cast iron skillet. Iron. Done.

(I promise to do better next year. We have been running 100 miles a minute and throwing these gifts in the mix just wasn't working.)

Our meal was actually amazing. I am always stunned that places with absolutely no vegetarian fare on the entree list can be my favorite. Let's be honest, I always want an appetizer and two sides over a veggie platter ANY DAY. The popcorn grits did not disappoint. (Other than not being made in a cast iron skillet.)

Then we took a short little stroll down the river to see a friend from high school perform at a wondrous coffee house/bar/outdoor music venue. It was pretty spectacular. I truly love this city and the lives we get to live here.

I Spy

20 minutes into a rousing game in the backseat...

Zayd: "Simon says 'yell!'"
Yelling ensues...
Zayd: "Zahra, get out of the car!"
Pause...
Zayd: "I didn't say Simon says. You lose!"
Me: "But she didn't get out of the car, Zayd..."
Zayd: "Oh ha ha."
Zahra: "Mommy! Stop! We are playing I Spy! Gosh!!" (Exasperated)
Me: "Zahra, I think you're playing Simon Says. "
Zahra: "Zayd, what are we playing?"
Zayd: "Simon Says"
Zahra: "What's that!?!"

Keeping track

Zayd has needed a considerable amount of extra love and affirmation these past few days. There's the complete meltdown before school Monday, hyperventilating when I suggested he eat broccoli to get a cupcake at Green Vegetarian Restaurant on Wednesday, for consecutive days of early morning wakeups and snuggles, and many many extra tears.

When Zayd had his four year checkup, we decided to forego the therapies that had dotted each week of our winter this year and see if we notice a difference. Something's up this week.

On the one hand, I feel I shouldn't tell this small blog world about my lentil's daily ups and downs. On they other it is my best way of keeping record. I just want to be sure I write it down so I can objectively look back at the end of May and assess our progress.

Maybe he's just beating a cold or something...
