Breaking out for spring break: Lubbock and the road to Taos

Our kids school calendar this year is especially unique given the pandemic. They have an 18-day spring break and despite knowing it would be hard to travel, I was intent on making something happen. Thank goodness too, on because the first day of our road trip, memories kept popping up on my phone of our trip to Panama last year. The one we embarked on and came back to a lockdown that seemingly never ended.

I had to work around work and gymnastics and we came up with the following 9-day plan. Halfway through the trip, I'd say we're having a wonderful time!

Lubbock was just a stopping point for us, something to break up the drive. We loved loved our hotel: Cotton Court! We didn't have much on our Lubbock itinerary given we are staying away from indoor activities but we all did enjoy the Prairie Dog town at Mackenzie Park.

Despite it being desperately cold, my big kids swore they wanted to swim in the "heated" pool. In the end, both of them wrote home to Nani that the "heated" part was a lie (it wasn't). We wrapped up our Lubbock stay with two kids crying, one because she swam and got too cold, one because he didn't swim and wanted to have fun like his big sibs. Enjoy the series we are calling, "Big brother tries to cheer up smaller sibling."
En route to Taos we stopped in a tiny little Museum called the Billy the Kid Museum. It wasn't the most amazing but was a good chance to stretch our legs, pretend to lock each other in an old timey jail cell and dogs were permitted!

Zahra is a Star

This weekend, we were so very proud of our fierce little lady. She did wonderfully at her Level 2 meet and made herself (and, obviously, all of us) proud! Her first-ever competition was a long, long time coming with the pandemic and deep freeze of 2021, but she rolled with the punches these last two months and it all paid off today! Beyond her performance at the meet, I'm amazed at how maturely she handled herself when not only her first meet, but then her whole short season were cancelled due to forces outside her control. Thanks to her awesome coaches and teammates at Olympia Gymnastics who prepared her so well and saved the season by finding new opportunities for our girls!!

Zahra got a 9.1 on floor, 9.1 on vault, 9.45 on bars, and 9.7 on beam. She took 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 1st, respectively and second all around!
