Zayd's karate obsession began with a superheroes episode of Sesame Street where Super Grover needs a side kick. Out bursts Horatio with a "Hi-Ya!" and a love story was born. Zayd still loves Horatio and we anxiously await any new skit that will feature our beloved elephant pal. The elephant/karate combo was a special one though, certainly one deserving its own party theme!
Each kiddo had a Gi bag for them when they arrived. These doubled as pinata bags and a cool place to put the arts and crafts each kid made. I also included ninja rubber duckies for each tot. (Thank you Oriental Trading!)
The food was Japanese inspired: fried rice balls, rice krispie "sushi", PB&J "sushi", fruit, wasabi marinated beef, edamame dip, ninja star cupcakes and a Gi cake!
Each child got a black belt in their gift bag that they were encouraged to wear at the party. Here is my sweet little lady when she was oh so tiny dressed as a black belt!
Here's my two karate kids. In true Zayd style, he had a shirt with an elephant dressed in a Gi that I ACTUALLY FOUND ON THE INTERNET. Apparently, Zayd is not the only one who thinks elephants are the sole practitioners of karate!
In the backyard, we had a karate kid training course! Here is a neighbor doing the balance beam.
We also had a sushi rice dig where kids could practice their fine motor skills with chopsticks and rubber ninja duckies!
There was an arts and crafts station where warriors could make themselves Japanese inspired headbands. Be sure to check out the home made soft numchuks! (They are made from pipe insulation!)
And lastly, in keeping with things that almost don't make sense, we had an elephant pinata. Well, an elephant pinata wearing a Gi and a BUNCH of rhinestones. (The rhinestones were not my doing...)
Sorry to my little guy for failing to blog about his awesome party. I think I am seeing a trend where following actually putting on one of these parties, I completely burn out! Next time (just a few months a way) I will blog it before I hit the pillow that night. Promise.
It's hard to imagine when we threw this party that Zayd's obsession with karate chopping elephants would give way (whole heartedly) to CONSTRUCTION TRUCKS. Time flies!
